Implants
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are the most secure, enduring option for replacing lost teeth. The implants are metal posts similar to a screw that your dentist embeds into your jawbone. They perform the role of a root for your new tooth.
Over time, the implant fuses with your jawbone, providing a strong foundation for a crown — the visible part of your tooth. The new crown attaches securely to the implant, which keeps it in place.
Because the implant fuses with your jaw, it can’t come loose, which means it’s as secure as a natural tooth. Solomon Family Dentistry uses dental implants to replace a single missing tooth, several teeth, or even a row of dentures.
Implants are typically titanium or titanium alloys, which are light, incredibly strong, and biocompatible (meaning your body is less likely to adversely react to them).
What happens when I get dental implants?
The first stage is to fit the implants into your jaw. To do this successfully, you need to have enough healthy jawbone to secure the post. If you don’t have the healthy bone required for implantation and you’re a suitable candidate, you need to undergo bone graft surgery or a sinus lift to build up the jaw.
After the implant is secured in your jaw, it needs time to heal. Before fitting the crown, the bone has to fuse around the post, which can take several months. Solomon Family Dentistry uses Zimmer® Trabecular Metal™ implants that promote fusion and speed up the healing process. They also offer innovative All-on-4® and All-on-6® dental implants.
Your dentist designs the crowns that fit over the implants by using Encode® Impression System scanning technology to create impressions of the space and the nearby teeth. The new crown should match your existing teeth exactly, so you can’t tell which is a natural tooth and which is the crown.
Solomon Family Dentistry is able to create customized crowns in a matter of minutes using CEREC® same-day crown technology.
How do I care for my dental implants?
Caring for implants is just like looking after your natural teeth. Follow your usual oral care routine, brushing thoroughly twice a day and flossing once, but use a toothpaste that isn’t too abrasive and unwaxed or implant-specific floss or a water flosser. You also need to attend your regular dental checkups.
