What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is often considered a non-destructive disease and causes inflammation of the gums or gingiva which occurs when plaque and bacteria accumulate on your teeth. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can lead to more serious health and oral issues like tooth loss. Keeping an eye out for early signs can help prevent it from worsening but consult your dental office Summerville, SC for a prevention plan.

Symptoms

Gingivitis can display an array of signs and symptoms including tender gums which can be painful to touch, purple or bright red coloration of the gums, bleeding while brushing or flossing, halitosis commonly known as bad breath, and swelling and inflammation of the gums, and your gum line can begin receding or softening.

If you notice any signs of gingivitis, your dentist can administer proper treatment which can help successfully reverse the condition. If you continue with prompt at home care and follow-ups, you could restore your oral health completely and keep the symptoms of the disease at bay.

Make sure you are brushing twice daily and follow it up with flossing to remove plaque build up plus rinsing with antiseptic mouthwash for the prevention of gingivitis. Any dental office Summerville, SC would recommend an electric toothbrush for better results.

If gingivitis is ignored, without proper treatment, periodontitis can occur. This is an extreme condition which could lead to the loss of teeth and bone completely.

If you happen to notice any of the early or more severe symptoms of gingivitis, do the best thing for your health and contact Solomon Family Dentistry to get your oral health on track.
