What is a root canal?
A root canal is a necessary procedure to save a seriously infected tooth. Your provider treats the infection and removes the damaged tissue inside the tooth.
We start by completely numbing the area, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Fixing the tooth also eliminates the pain from the infection.
Next, your provider drills a small hole into the tooth and uses thin needles called endodontic files to clean out the root canals. After cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, your provider fills it with gutta percha, a rubber-like material that protects and seals the inside of the tooth.
The gutta percha blocks out bacteria to prevent infection. A crown restores the biting surface of the tooth and provides added protection.
Depending on the damage to your tooth, a root canal may take one or two visits to our office.
Possible complications of delaying treatment
When left untreated, the bacteria infecting the tooth can spread to your gums and jaw, causing problems such as a pus-filled pocket (abscess), and threatening your jaw bone health. This type of serious dental infection often causes severe pain, and swelling.
Eventually, an untreated dental abscess can lead to a life-threatening blood infection.
If you have an abscess, your provider will carefully drain the pus and prescribe antibiotics to clear the infection and prevent further complications.
