Biopsies
Biopsies
What are oral biopsies?
If you or your dentist notice any unusual bumps or growths in your mouth, your provider removes a small sample (biopsy) of the affected tissue and sends it to a lab for further inspection.
To perform an oral biopsy, your Solomon Family Dentistry provider takes a small tissue sample from your mouth. Once they have an accurate diagnosis, they can offer you a customized treatment plan if needed.
Statistics show that an estimated 54,000 Americans will receive an oral cancer diagnosis this year. That’s why you want to find out if cancer cells reside in the abnormalities in your mouth. If your provider finds cancer cells, they can start your treatment plan right away.
When are biopsies necessary?
If uncommon or out-of-the-ordinary symptoms appear on your lips or in your mouth, your dentist can perform a biopsy to rule out or confirm the presence of an oral disease.
You may need a biopsy if you notice:
- Mouth lesions that won’t heal
- Growths or bumps inside your mouth
- Red or white patches on the inside of your cheeks, gums, or tongue
- Loose permanent teeth
- Consistent pain in your mouth, ear, or both
- Pain when you swallow
If you have any of these symptoms, contact your provider for an appointment to get an accurate diagnosis right away. You can’t always detect oral cancer from symptoms alone. That’s why you should keep your annual, routine visits with your dentist to monitor the condition of your oral health.
How can I avoid the need for oral biopsies?
When you take a proactive role in your oral health, you can lower your risk of oral complications. Your dentist recommends that you:
- Brush your teeth and tongue at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Floss at least once a day
- Don’t smoke cigarettes, cigars, or pipes
- Don’t chew tobacco
- Limit your alcohol intake
When you incorporate these practices into your lifestyle, you’re likely to maintain good oral health.
What are the benefits of oral biopsies?
An oral biopsy gives you answers. If you have an oral issue that has a diagnosis requiring treatment, then your provider can implement an action plan quickly. However, if the biopsy rules out reasons for concern, then you can relax and not worry.
If you have reason to believe that you might need an oral biopsy, call Solomon Family Dentistry or book your appointment online today.
