Where To Go For Emergency Dental Care

Emergency Dental Care | A dental emergency can happen at any time of day or night. Sports injuries, accidents, even biting into a piece of hard food can cause a chipped, cracked or even lost tooth. These injuries are often painful and require immediate attention. Do you know where to go for emergency dental care if a serious problem arises?

If you chip, crack or lose a tooth, call your dentist’s office right away. Many dental offices are equipped to handle a variety of dental emergencies, and can schedule an appointment to get you seen quickly. Dentists can often use a simple procedure called bonding to repair a small to medium-sized chip in a tooth.

If your tooth is badly chipped or cracked, wrap the tooth fragment in a wet cloth and bring it with you. Rinse your mouth with warm water and hold a cold compress to your face. Your dentist may recommend a crown or veneer to repair the tooth.

A lost or knocked-out permanent tooth should be gently rinsed with warm water. Take care not to wash away the connecting tissues. Try to insert the tooth back in its socket, holding the top of the tooth with a wet, clean cloth. If reinsertion is not possible, place the tooth in a container of milk or your saliva to take to your dentist’s office.

Of course, emergencies don’t only happen on weekdays. Your dentist’s office may not be open when you need them. You should still call and leave a message for your dentist explaining the problem so they can follow-up with you as soon as possible. The answering machine may include an emergency phone number or recommend a nearby emergency dental office.

If you’re unable to schedule an appointment with your dentist and don’t have access to an emergency dental clinic, head to the nearest emergency room. The staff can help determine whether your injury can wait until you’re able to visit your dentist. They might also prescribe pain medication to control your symptoms in the meantime.
