Dental Crowns | Are Dental Bridges or Dental Crowns Right For You?

Dental Crowns | Bridges and crowns are permanent dental prosthetics used to cover your natural teeth or implants. These devices improve the appearance, shape and alignment of your teeth, as well as strengthen and protect damaged teeth.

Dental crowns are like a permanent cap that covers the entire visible part of a tooth. Crowns are used to restore the original appearance and function of a damaged tooth, or to help an implant look and function like a natural tooth. Your dentist may also use a crown to hold together a tooth with a large filling or prevent a weak tooth from fractures.

If you have one or more missing teeth, your dentist may recommend a bridge. Bridges are often used to fill gaps left by missing teeth to prevent your remaining teeth from shifting out of place. A bridge resembles a denture, with an artificial replacement tooth or teeth connected to caps that fit over your existing teeth. Unlike a denture, bridges are cemented in place and can only be removed by your dentist.

Bridges and dental crowns are made from many materials. Porcelain or ceramic bridges and crowns can be colored to match the shade of your natural teeth. Crowns can also be made from acrylic resin or gold and metal alloys to provide extra strength for certain teeth.

Your dentist will need to prepare your tooth or teeth for a crown or bridge. The tooth or teeth are reduced in size so the prosthetic device can fit over them correctly. Next your dentist will take an impression of your teeth so that your bridge or crown will have an exact fit. You may receive a temporary crown or bridge to cover the prepared teeth while a dental lab makes your prosthetic. When the device is ready, your dentist cements it in place for a permanent hold.
